DIY – Upgrade Your Old Deck

| June 18, 2010 | 0 Comments

Is your deck looking like it is past its prime? Does it even have the odd softer spot here and there? Is it faded and looks more the color of gray concrete than of red cedar? If you have already priced out the cost of a replacement and decided that you haven’t got a spare $8,000 at the moment – think whether or not you have a spare weekend or two. If you ‘con’ the family or friends to join in and help, it may even be a fun and memorable weekend.

The valve is the heart of the faucet and controls the volume of water. There are four types of faucet valves:

Compression valves

Compression valve faucets have been in use the longest and are the least expensive type. They are identifiable by their separate hot and cold water handles and their action requiring you to tighten the handles down to close off the water flow.

Plumbing Repairs

If you’re an average American, then you go to work 5 days a week, and any free time you have you spend keeping your sanity with the daily strains of life. Plumbing repair is usually one of the last things on your mind. I know personally as a plumber that time is precious. I work full time and go to school full time. It is almost impossible to find to take care of anything. One thing that is often over looked is house maintenance. Your home is your largest investment. Most damage is done by water. Your home is 5 times more likely to suffer damage from water than fire. To prevent such catastrophes from happening, it is good to keep preventive maintenance on your plumbing system. Plumbing repair is considerably cheaper than repairing an entire room from damage. Some steps to take when looking out for plumbing repair issues in your home are:

Do It Yourself Energy Efficiency Projects: Your Home’s Thermal Envelope (Part 2)

| June 17, 2010 | 0 Comments

Right now, there are a few things you can do around your home to air seal it to save money during the winter months and during the summer.

As mentioned in Part 1, your home is a “thermal envelope”. That is the sum total of the home’s insulation systems: walls, ceilings, foundation, floors, windows, and doors. These work more effectively with good, tight fits that seal out the weather and air. By having a tight seal on your home’s thermal envelope, the less energy you waste or lose by exchanging it too often with the air outside.

Ariston A1636

| June 17, 2010 | 0 Comments

I bought my Ariston A1636 from currys in may 2005 for ?269.98 including delivery. It was in a sale, ?150 off. So it was originally ?419.98 including delivery. When it first came out at currys in 2004 it was ?519.98 including delivery so I got it for just over half price. An absolute bargain. The things that attracted me were it’s fast spin, the reports of Ariston being a reliable make and the fact that the A1636 model uses the same Brushless induction motor that the hotpoint super silent models use. On a wash cycle you can’t hear it working at all (47 decibels maximum) and on the fastest spin I wouldn’t call it super silent, but It is almost certainly quieter than 95% of Washing machines on the market, even though at 1,600 rpm, it is one of the fastest. The only washer that is quieter on the spin cycle is An LG direct drive washer, like the one my mum has, But this ariston is almost as quiet on the fastest spin and just as quiet on the wash cycle and upto about 1,000 rpm as an LG.

Intangible Tools For Garage Door Repair

| June 17, 2010 | 0 Comments

When you view a garage door going up or down, you likely survey the largest moving part in a home’s mechanical structure. As such, it requires a lot of sub-parts. And these wear out due to the law of Entropy, or whatever you call it. In my observations of garage doors–both in normal function and in the replacement process–I see that there are many things that have to happen in a mechanical sense for the door to operate correctly. So it should come as no surprise that getting it adjusted and fixed is not a game of horseshoes.
